STSPIN32 BLDC Motor Driver Simplifies High-Voltage BLDC Design Process

The STMicroelectronics STSPIN32F0 family of motor control system-in-packages introduces four new products that simplify the development and design of mains-powered household appliances and industrial equipment including corded power tools, drives, pumps, fans and compressors.

The 250V STSPIN32F0251 and STSPIN32F0252 and 600V STSPIN32F0601 and STSPIN32F0602 integrate three-phase gate drivers and STM32F0 Arm? Cortex?-M0 microcontrollers, which can simplify the design process of high-voltage brushless DC motor (BLDC) drivers, provide mainstream control algorithms and Application examples include single- and three-resistor current sensing vector control (FOC), as well as sensored single-resistor current sensing and six-step sensorless conventional motor control methods.

  

The four new products are pin-compatible, and the hardware and software firmware can be reused to control 110V AC and 250V AC motors. These ICs feature a standby mode that minimizes power consumption when the motor stops running into an idle state.

These gate drivers all integrate bootstrap diodes and protection circuits, including common and dead-time prevention. In addition, there is UVLO undervoltage protection on both the high and low sides of the driver circuit to prevent the power switch from operating inefficiently or dangerous conditions, and a patented quick-action smart shutdown (smartSD) function for overload and overcurrent protection.

The integrated 48MHz STM32F0 MCU enables users to develop applications relying on the resource-rich STM32 ecosystem. 4KB SRAM and 32KB Flash for data and software storage, and analog-to-digital peripherals including a 12-bit ADC with up to 10 channels, 6 general-purpose timers, 21 general-purpose I/O (GPIO) pins, and I2C, UART, and SPI Communication Interface. An integrated bootloader supports field application firmware updates, increasing flexibility in device lifecycle management.

Four inverter evaluation boards are available on the market and are fully compatible with the X-CUBE-MCSDK (motor control software development tool) after version 5.4.1, which simplifies the development and design of motor controllers including single-resistor and three-resistor current sensing . The 600V EVSPIN32F0601S1, EVSPIN32F0601S3, EVSPIN32F0602S1 and 250V EVSPIN32F0251S1 circuit boards have a power stage and a MOSFET output stage. The latter adopts a dual-package variable design that allows users to replace the original board components with other DPAK or PowerFlat packaged MOSFET or IGBT components. The detachable STLINK debugger allows to configure microcontrollers and debug firmware using standard STM32 tools. The EV kit also provides single-wire debug (SWD) and UART connectors.

The STSPIN32F0251, STSPIN32F0252, STSPIN32F0601 and STSPIN32F0602 are available in a 10mm x 10mm TQFP package.
