Coursera and MathWorks team up to release new data science course

Beijing, China – November 1, 2019 – MathWorks and Coursera, the world’s leading online learning platform, announced today that they will work together to bridge the data science skills gap. MathWorks has developed the Data Science in Practice with MATLAB online course series, the first of which is Exploratory Data Analysis with MATLAB, now available on Coursera. Specializations in four courses that help learners use MATLAB to solve domain-specific data problems are open for registration: coursera.org/specializations/practical-data-science-matlab.

According to the March 2019 Coursera® Global Skills Index (GSI) report, both individuals and companies are in increasing demand for data science skills. Looking at the number of learner enrollments in data science over the years, there has been a significant increase in demand for both machine learning and statistical programming skills (14% and 9% year-over-year, respectively). As the volume of data collected across industries continues to increase, fueling the need for more and more personalization of products and services, it affects the popularity of these skills.

The Specialization in Data Science in Practice with MATLAB can help address this need, as it is aimed at engineers, scientists, and researchers who need to learn data science to meet their job needs or to open up new career opportunities. This series of courses enables experts in these fields to learn and apply data science without spending time developing or practicing software development skills. Each course takes approximately five weeks. After completing four courses of specialization, students can begin applying MATLAB knowledge to common analytical tasks in application areas such as autonomous systems, speech recognition, predictive maintenance, and medical imaging.
