The CS1630 and CS1631 are high-performance offline AC/DC LED drivers for dimmable and high color rendering index (CRI) LED replacement lamps and luminaires. It features Cirrus Logic’s proprietary digital dimmer compatibility control technology and digital correlated color temperature (CCT) control system that enables two-channel LED color mixing. The CS1630 is designed for 120VAC line voltage applications, and the CS1631 is optimized for 230VAC line voltage applications.
The CS1630/31 integrates a critical conduction mode boost converter, providing power factor correction and superior dimmer compatibility with a primary-side regulated quasi-resonant second stage, which is configurable for isolated and non-isolated topologies. The digital CCT control system provides the ability to program dimming profiles, such as constant CCT dimming and black body line dimming. The CS1630/31 optimizes LED color mixing by temperature compensating LED current with an external NTC. The IC controller is also equipped with power line calibration for remote system calibration and end-of-line programming. The CS1630/31 provides a register lockout feature for security against potential access to proprietary registers.

CRD1631-9W 9 Watt Reference Design
The CRD1631-9W reference design demonstrates the performance of the CS1631 resonant mode AC/DC dimmable LED driver IC with constant current output driving 419mA for white LEDs and 190mA for red LEDs in series 2 channel output configuration. It offers best-in-class dimmer compatibility with leading-edge, trailing-edge, and digital dimmers. Additionally, it offers superior 2 channel control with single channel LED temperature compensation for LED color mixing applications. The form factor is targeted to fit into many LED bulb applications (A19, PAR ).

The CS1631 is a 230VAC quasi-resonant flyback mode dimmable LED controller IC. The CS1631 uses a digital control algorithm that is optimized for high efficiency and 0.90 power factor over a wide input voltage range (207VAC to 253VAC). The CS1631 integrates a critical conduction mode (CRM) boost converter that provides power factor correction and dimmer compatibility with a constant output current, quasi-resonant flyback stage. An adaptive dimmer compatibility algorithm controls the boost stage and dimmer compatibility operation mode to enable flicker-free operation to 0% output current with leading-edge, trailing-edge, and digital dimmers. The CS1631’s interleaved 2 channel output allows two independent channel constant current regulation and eliminates additional transformers.
Temperature compensated LED current and color control system with NTC maintains constant color temperature over ambient temperature variation.
The CRD1631-9W board is optimized to deliver low system cost in a high-efficiency, flicker-free, phase-dimmable, solid-state lighting (SSL) solution for incandescent lamp replacement applications. The feedback loop is closed through an integrated digital control system within the IC. The variation in switching frequency and programmable frequency dithering also provides a spread-frequency spectrum, thus minimizing the conducted EMI filtering requirements.
Protection algorithms, such as output open/short, current-sense resistor open/short, and overtemperature thermistors, protect the system during abnormal conditions.
The CRD1631-9W board demonstrates the performance of the CS1631. This reference board has been designed for an output load of 4 white LEDs at 419mA (12.96V typical), and 5 red LEDs at 190mA (10V typical) in series 2 channel output configuration at 25 degrees C.
This document provides the schematic for the board. It includes oscilloscope screen shots that indicate various operating waveforms. Graphs are also provided that document the performance of the board in terms of Efficiency vs. Line Voltage, Output Current vs. Line Voltage, and Output Current vs. Dim Angle for the CS1631 dimmable LED controller IC. Extreme caution needs to be exercised while handling this board. This board is to be used by trained professionals only.

The flyback transformer stage is a quasi-resonant peak current-regulated DC-DC converter capable of delivering the highest possible efficiency with constant current output while minimizing line frequency ripple. The auxiliary winding is used for zero-current detection and overvoltage protection.

The CS1631 uses an adaptive dimmer compatibility algorithm to control the boost Inductor stage, which guarantees dimmer compatibility operation plus enables flicker-free operation with leading-edge, trailing-edge, and digital dimmers (dimmers with an integrated power supply). The boost auxiliary winding is used for zero-current detection (ZCD) and supplies power to the CS1631.
